- Lamins are fibrous proteins which are the structural components of the nuclear lamina .There are three classes of lamins A, B and C. Lamin A and C result from alternative transcripts of the same gene while B type lamins are expressed from different genes. Lamins have been implicated in many cellular processes associated with nuclear structural integrity including chromatin compartmentation, transcriptional activation, nuclear envelope degradation and formation during mitosis and nuclear defects associated with aging. Lamin A was found to be cleaved by caspase 6 during apoptotic signalling in colon cancer lines treated with a pro apoptotic drug. Mutations in the lamin A gene have been associated with many muscular dystrophies and neuropathies including Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy, limb-girdle muscular dystrophy and Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.
Sequencing of any given sample through the gene sets should be considered work in progress. Lack of reported mutations in any given gene for a particular sample does not necessarily imply the sample is wildtype for the gene.
